Noel Bougrier is among the last of the family owned independent wine producing companies in the Loire Valley. With 5 generations dating back to 1885, their wines represent outstanding value and are known for their clean and crisp expression of pure fruit character. The Touraine 2012 is a mouthwatering Sauvignon with zesty citrus and gooseberry flavors expected from this vibrant grape. Delicate lemon curd aromas give an extra dimension of sweetness. Softening towards honey and melon, becoming gentler and more floral to the finish, this is truly a Loire Valley classic. Winemaker Frank Chatelain likes to emphasize delicacy in his Touraine Sauvignon and ferments this wine at cool temperatures in stainless steel vats. Frank prefers to allow minimal pre-fermentation skin-contact and settles them on their lees for a long period of time to generate subtle complexity and structure. Sauvignon from the Touraine region is reputedly lively, firm and dry, well behaved with a racy character. There would be no chance of getting this quality for the price from any of the Loire’s more famous regions like Sancerre and Pouilly, but Touraine always offer great value. A beautiful example of Bordeaux, mostly composed of Merlot and Cabernet Franc the blend is finished out with Pressac Noir, a cousin to Malbec grown specifically in St Emilion and name after the estate. Warm spices leap from the glass with a full body and just enough grip to hold up to a big rib-eye.
